S&M Café, London
The S&M Café (short for sausage and mash, what else?) prides itself on offering the sort of traditional British comfort food once widely available in greasy spoon cafés, albeit with the greasy bit discreetly tidied away. A skilled purveyor of a wide range of hangover-easing dishes, S&M specialises in all manner of bangers (from traditional pork to vegetarian, via those laced with apple, Guinness and chilli), full English breakfasts, hearty classics such as steak and kidney pie, and vintage British drinks like Dandelion and Burdock. The interior is a glossier, more uniform version of the classic caff, with chrome finishes, Formica tables, gingham tablecloths and 1950s furniture. The slick image is readily welcomed by its hip following, and why wouldn’t it be when it’s such a welcome haven for those in need of soothing food? Hanker down here and ‘eat yourself happy,’ as the S&M folk say.

Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles, Los Angeles
This probably sounds like a weird recommendation if you aren't from around here… fried chicken served with waffles isn't your usual fare. But Roscoe's – all of its various restaurants around town – are veritable institutions, and will take your palate to heavenly places it didn't realise it wanted to go. This is soul food... spicy, messy, fattening, straightforward, and utterly comforting. The menu has plenty more to choose from than the aforementioned fowl and fluffy breakfast fare – think heart-stopping breakfasts, mac and cheese, candied yams, smothered potatoes, greens – and all of it offers a welcome dose of reinvigoration for those with hazy heads. And whilst you’re here, you should really take advantage of the house specialty… Sweet potato pie for dessert is never a bad idea, is it?

Ristretto, Beirut
It’s all about the espresso in Ristretto, a small café regularly packed with students from local universities AUB and LAU in Hamra. Having been around for a good few years, this simple American-style diner serves respectable pancakes and eggs for breakfast to an enthusiastic and loyal customer base that quickly packs out the few available seats. The vibe is constantly buzzing, as is the coffee, and thus Ristretto becomes an ideal place to nurse your Friday night hangover before tackling anything quite as ambitious as the papers. You’re welcome to brood alone here, but if you’re the type to talk yourself out of a funk, you’ll probably bump into some local students or professors only too willing to debate on local politics, history and the art of coffee.

Emack & Bolio’s, New York
The affection for Emack & Bolio’s runs deep throughout the city, and if you’re in need of somewhere to refresh yourself and coolly nurse your hangover, you’ll see the attraction... 40-plus hormone-free, organic ice creams, plenty of diet-friendly alternatives, and specialty yogurts – not to mention a plethora of candies and cookie toppings, and waffle cones – bring out the kid in all of us. Among the clever flavours – including the luxurious Deep Purple Cow (raspberry ice cream with dried blueberries and white and milk chocolate chips, ideally served under the warmth of a layer of hot fudge) and low-fat key lime pie yoghurt – is something for everyone, plus there is a wide variety of teas, chais, and coffee beverages. All in all, a delightful little stopover when a pick-me-up is needed.

Lola’s, Cape Town
This shaggy Bohemian café, situated in the heart of the bustling backpacker quarter, is the perfect place to re-fuel and re-energise. A melange of retro-kitsch styling and haphazard thrown-together anti-glamour, it is one of the spots along this stretch to gather for hangover-quelling breakfasts and filling vegetarian meals that range from overly cheesy macaroni to mushroom-topped lasagne. It’s the relaxed, laid-back vibe you come for, and a seat on the sidewalk guarantees an endless succession of passing eye-candy and a chance to ogle Long Street’s special brand of inner city bravado. Inside, the cafe is done up in bold retro colours, large fried egg-shaped daisies painted onto the walls and ceiling, and comfortable plastic chairs. If what’s needed is a dose of hair of the dog, there’s also a full bar service; beer specials are sometimes listed on the A-frame chalkboard outside. So if you want to feel part and parcel of inner city Cape Town whilst nursing your hangover, head for the funky music on Long Street.
