Louvre, Paris
The Louvre is a Parisian institution; it has stunned the city of lights with its majestic grandeur for centuries. Steeped in history - the museum was once Louis XIV's palace - the Louvre attracts millions of visitors keen to see its huge Collection, including the world's most famous painting, the Mona Lisa. Entrance to the museum is via the impressive glass and steel pyramid, designed by I.M Pei, and at the back are the magnificent Tuileries and Carrousel Gardens.

Tate Modern, London
The striking chimney belonging to the Tate Modern can be seen from both sides of the River Thames and has become something of a landmark in the SE1 postcode. Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron converted the old power station into its current guise in 2000, and it has since housed works by international artists including Picasso, Matisse, Magritte, Rothko and Warhol to name but a few. An extension - to be completed by Herzog & de Meuron - is in progress and will provide more space for displaying the Collection, installations and performance art pieces.

Bauhaus Archiv, Berlin
Bauhaus - a revolutionary school of art, architecture and design - was established by architect Walter Gropius at Weimar in Germany, 1919. It then moved to Dessau, before coming to Berlin in 1932, where it was closed down by the Nazis. The Bauhaus Archiv opened in 1979, showcasing the history of the school. Its collection includes sculptures, sketches, photographs, ceramics and furniture created in the workshop by the likes of Wassily Kandinsky, Oskar Schlemmer and Marcel Breuer. The Walter Gropius-designed building has become something of an icon in the art world.

Museum of Modern Art, New York
If MoMa's exhibitions were housed in the Guggenheim, it would arguably be the best gallery in the world. Alas, the Guggenheim's exhibitions are somewhat lacking in creativity, as is the plain MoMa building. Inside however, it's a different story; the museum opened in 1929 with the mission of challenging conventions of the museum world and it continues to do so today - it recently housed live performance art from controversial Yugoslavian artist Marina Abramovi.

Museo del Prado, Madrid
Prado houses one of the impressive and important collections of art in the world. You would struggle to make it round the entire museum in just one day, but works from Spanish artists Goya, Velázquez and El Greco are must-sees, so head for these first. Architect Rafael Moneo's £100m addition to the Padro is not on the same jaw-dropping scale of Frank Gehry's Guggenheim, or the eagerly awaited Tate Modern extension, but is a simple and serious building that allows the art to take the spotlight.
