top 5 ice cream parlours

Check out these great tips provided by Hg2

As summer heats up, you'll need to cool down - why is why Hazel Lubbock from luxury city guide publisher Hg2 has tracked down the best ice cream parlours across the globe.

Gelateria di San Crispino, Rome

Gelateria Giolitti is certainly Rome's most famous gelateria, but with that comes the hordes of crowds and a lengthy queue. So, combine a trip to the Trevi fountain with a visit to Gelateria di San Crispino. Flavours change according to season; we recommend the signature San Crispino - made from wild Sardinian honey - for those who are put off by the colour of pistachio flavour (it's grey rather than green).

Pozzetto, Caffe Gelato - Paris

Internationally renowned for its superb ice creams, Pozetto is arguably the best ice cream parlour in Paris. In-the-know Parisians will tell you to avoid the other tourist traps to come to this contemporary candy-type store. You can choose from a dozen freshly made flavours - melon, fior di latte and maroons glacés are some of the best on offer.

Rinomata Gelateria, Milan

Rinomata Gelateria still retains its original 1950s fittings, giving it the feel of an old-fashioned seaside ice cream parlour. Owner Geppo follows his family recipe to produce 40 handmade sorbets and ice creams, available any day of the year, in traditional and more experimental flavours such as chocolate pear and rice pudding. The creamy creme caramel flavour is our favourite.

Emack & Bolio's, New York

For hormone-free, organic ice-creams and a selection of gym bunny-friendly frozen yoghurts, there really is only one place, Emack & Bolio's. There is something for everyone to gorge on; candies and cookies make delicious toppings, and a wide variety of beverages please those without a sweet tooth. Try the Deep Purple Cow (raspberry ice cream with white and milk chocolate chips, served under a layer of hot fudge).

Patisserie Valerie, London

The chain Patisserie Valerie was started in 1926 by Belgian Madame Valerie in Soho, and since then its reputation has been built on the devilishly extravagant cakes sat in the window. The Spitalfields branch - designed by Norman Foster as part of the Spitalfields re-development - is housed in a striking triangular glass structure that juts out on to the street. The gelateria opens in summer, serving over 30 flavours of deliciously tempting home-made ice-cream.
